The original part of this is in the On-Topic forum.
Since most of us are probably in our 20s and up now, I haven't had something like this happen in a LONG time, since most of us are grown up (except for an ex-friend's ex-wife who pulled this b. s. on me, but that was about 10 years ago, plus she was the dumbest, most immature person I had ever met), but I was just wondering what kind of stuff you would pull out to shut some bonehead up when he stereotyped you into only listening to metal...or, if you just feel like sharing what other things reside in your music collection; either one!
Here's some non-metal stuff from my collection:
various different rock (or not)
Psychedlic (sp?) Furs
U2
The Cars
Soda Stereo (Spanish rock, got it years before anyone else got into it/had ever heard of Ricky Martin, Shakira, etc., et al)
Katey Sagal (Peg Bundy from Married...with Children's album)
Basia (cabaret-type singer...good-looking and a good singer, sure, but boring as sh*t music, actually)
R. E. M.
Big Country
Imani Copolla (sp? She sings, she raps, she plays fiddle! Great, varied, funny, different cd!)
"Weird" Al Yankovic
new wave (I guess)
Platinum Blonde (a few of their tunes are metal, actually)
Men Without Hats
classical
mostly movie soundtracks, like RoboCop, Star Wars, etc.
Vanessa-Mae (combines classical with pop/rock rhythms)
rap
Eazy-E
The Afros
Ghetto Mafia
XZIbit (combines rap with piano and classical)
blues (only one!)
Stevie Ray Vaughan
new age
Ottmar Leibert (sp? Flameco guitar player)
Gaelic Storm (they were the "steerage band" in the Titanic movie)
Cusco
Kate Price
Hevia--inventor of the electronic bagpipes...killer debut!!! (second one is real generic I heard, and he's already coming out with a live album, so I guess he's already running out of ideas...sad to hear )
Deuter
Mars Lasar
bands I don't know what bleepin' category they go under
The Victims Family (metal/hardcore? They've got a fat bass sound, anyway)
Primus (speaking of... )
Love in Reverse (somewhat metal [might do a review on them] mixed with Pink Floyd and lord knows what else...excellent group, Johnny Z [who made Anthrax huge] was their manager, too bad he couldn't do
much with them)
King (anyone see this guy's/group's videos in the 80s? [No, not THE king, as in Elvis, nor King Diamond] Kind of alternative rock, I guess...just wondering if anyone knew anything about them, I'm just curious as far as their heritage, they looked indian or Arabian or something [except for the one white guy in the group])
dark ambient
Mortiis/Vond/Cintecele Diavolui (sp? It's all the same guy)
Swartalf
Desiderii Marginis
a recording of some Giagan choir (don't know if that's even spelled right, it's an offshoot of Spanish)
singles of various kinds
Kraftwurk, The Little River Band, Moby, Madonna (don't look at me like that, she did a good remake [complete with new lyrics from herself] of "American Pie", ok?), Lit, Smashing Pumpkins, Pretty Maids (gotta have a few metal singles anyway!), Concrete Blonde, A Flock of Seagulls, Milli Vanilli (I hate to admit...I just liked their mix of rap and singing, even though I didn't know who was doing it at the time!), The Power Station, Paul Simon, Qkumba Zoo, Shakesphere's Sister (more new wave/synthesizer stuff on those two)...and all kinds of other stuff
And yourself?
Let's see...
For the funk/jazz genre:
Herbie Hancock (mainly the fusion stuff from the 70's)
Funkadelic (George Clinton)
Ohio Players (remember those album covers?)
Parliament (George Clinton)
Weather Report (again, fusion)
For punk:
Nomeansno (trio from Canada, just amazing)
Just plain weird:
Buckethead (check this guy out!)
Other stuff:
Max Webster (can't say enough good things about them)
Kim Mitchell (Max's lead guitarist)
Robin Trower (blues master)
The Police (a great pop band)
Journey (yeah, some of their old stuff rocked)
The Fixx (gotta love the 80's)
ZZ Top (of course)
Rush (of course)
The list could go on and on... but most of this stuff baffles the average listener when I bust it out, and that's just the way I want it!

I THINK I've heard some of their stuff over 10 years ago...I could swear a friend of mine got one of their tapes...dang that sounds familiar!

They came here several years ago for only $5 a ticket for a show, along with A Flock of Seagulls and a couple of other bands I'm forgetting; I should've gone...
Oh yeah, and the 80s kicked butt!
