'Yes indeed – the talk of the Classic Rock office at the moment is the new release from Hellhound, titled Tokyo Flying V Massacre!
You can tell the album is going to be a cast-iron classic just by its title. That impression is reinforced by the photo on the sleeve, which depicts an arm encased in a studded wristband smashing a Flying V guitar into an amplifier, sparks flying everywhere. Yes! This is, to all intents and purposes, an Exciter record from 1983.
Hellhound are, of course, Japanese; their members are called Crossfire, Swordmaster (that's him in the photo), Lucifer’s Heritage and Dragonblaster; and they write the stoopidest anthems this side of Manowar’s Metal Daze.
Just lookit the choruses: ‘666! 666! 666! Metal assassin 666!’ ‘Samurai warrior – you fight! You kill! You die!’ ‘Heavy metal patrol! All the nations in control, under the reign of heavy metal!’
Sheer poetry, augmented by liberal doses of shrill screaming, mispronounced 'R's instead of 'L's, and brainless guitar riffs.
